Food service operations: cafeterias and vending facilities
We follow the Department of Health and Human Services’ to provide healthier food in our cafeterias and vending facilities to improve nutritional health and reduce impact on the environment. These Guidelines translate the current into clear and definitive standards that food service operators can follow to make their operations healthier and more sustainable.

Fitness centers & health and wellness
Agencies should incorporate health and wellness improvements such as readily available food options and on-site health and fitness facilities into their annual budgets. We are contributing to this effort by promoting healthy food options and regular physical activity.
Fitness centers
An agency can choose (under ) to establish and operate physical fitness programs and facilities designed to promote and maintain employee health, which we will help build out within agency-controlled space. We can also assist in establishing a joint facility for use by multiple agencies.
We can help agencies consider:
- Space needs and cost
- Equipment needs, maintenance, and cleaning
- Fitness center management
- Access to fitness centers, locker rooms, and showers

Consider the stairs
We encourage employees, tenants, and visitors of federally owned and leased buildings to step up to a healthier lifestyle by taking the stairs to help reduce risk for several diseases and health conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity.
Health units
Employee health units are a key component of a work-site wellness program. They deliver that are necessary for maintaining and improving employee health and wellness.
Lactation space support
through (1) a reasonable break time to express breast milk for her nursing child for 1 year after the child’s birth each time such employee has need to express milk; and (2) a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public which may be used by the employee to express breast milk.
